Lost in Translation
I have been using this video quite frequently lately as we enter the end of the semester and I have been brought into classes to talk about digital literacy in research. Two things that needs to be continually analyzed when students are doing research is the origin of the source and how many "translations" has the source gone through? When accessing secondary sources these can be countless and this video helps emphasize why we beed to be critical and cautious. Using it as a prompt, then introducing the Way Back Machine (the archive/time machine of the internet) and Easywhois (the internet registry) really opens up students eyes to how the internet works and can spark some really insightful and meaningful dialogue. If you really want to hammer home the point, challenge students to make their own "Lost in Translation" videos using famous quotes or speeches. If you do, please share.
